They put their whole body into pecking the nuts apart, raising up high and coming down with some force. For an apartment dweller, peanuts are nice, too, because there's not much left behind. The most exotic bird I had at my feeding station drawn to the splits was a Hermit Thrush; quite unexpected. Of course, you'll get the less desirable birds, too.
