We spotted a raft = of Canvasbacks(200 birds) and Ruddy Ducks north of the bridge going onto = the island. On one of the ponds we saw 125 N. Pintails plus Mallards = and A. Black Ducks. On the south side of the island we spotted Scaup, = Buffleheads and Tundras on the water. In one of the fields near the = paved turn-around we saw 75 A. Pipits and 6 Meadowlarks. Last week this = field had Horned Larks in it. At the end of the dirt road the fields = yielded 13 Savannah Sparrows. We were happy to see a White-breasted = Nuthatch as we had not seen one here before. It's funny how the = "ordinary" birds can thrill us. We were looking for a Fox and = White-crowned Sparrow, but no luck. We ended up with a total of 44 = species.
