Late yesterday afternoon (1/12/03), Paul Kane and I found the Piscataway Park bird swimming with Canadas in a pond behind the animal barns and pens at the National Colonial Farm, a part of the larger park. It provided its best view when it took off in flight with some Canadas, showing off the, black irregular barring on its pale underside, its orange legs and feet, and the white band on the tail. David Mozurkewich described the bird very well, but I am even less qualified than he to take a stab at identifying the bird to sub-species. I posted a couple of shots on a web site. If anyone cares to the take a look, they can be seen at http://homepage.mac.com/pmsullivan/PhotoAlbum3.html/ Clicking on the thumbnail view will provide a larger image. The scrub around the beautiful pond yielded a bonus species --Tree Sparrow. There were 2, possibly 4, looking quite lovely in the afternoon light.
