I've cringed at some of the patronizing comments I see when someone makes a mistake -- and have a couple of times been the object of them. A week or two ago I identified an immature male Common Goldeneye at Centennial Lake several days before it was posted here, but I didn't post for fear of derision if I were wrong. As it happened, I was correct on all three counts -- it was indeed identified by a more experienced birder as an immature male Common Goldeneye -- but although I was confident enough of my identification to include it in my own 2003 list, I was afraid to post. I disagree strenuously with the comment about responding on-list to questions about optics, field guides and such. I read those replies avidly. I'm saving my pennies for a scope, and the various replies to the question about inexpensive scopes were extremely valuable to me -- in fact, I saved all of them for future reference. If I ever get the opportunity to go the Caribbean, I can search the archives for the responses to the question about bird guides for Grenada, which included additional helpful information from Gail Mackiernan about websites. I would hate to see this useful information lost to the rest of us because the replies were sent privately -- please do continue responding publicly to requests for information. As a relatively new birder it's invaluable to me, and even the most experienced birders may learn something.
