Subject: What?? A Brown Pelican over Pickering Creek??

Around noon today (17 Jan 03) I stopped in at the Pickering Creek
Audubon Center and joined with Mark Scallion for a brief walk around their
grounds. To our mutual astonishment, a look into the sky at one point
revealed a soaring immature Brown Pelican. The bird was slightly east of
the Pickering Creek grounds, perhaps still over Pickering Creek itself, but
above the community called Forest Landing. Other birds seemed similarly
surprised, for a Bald Eagle came over to check it out, as did a Turkey
Vulture. So - keep an eye on the sky, even during these windy and cold
days.
Other birds found included: Hermit Thrush, Towhee, many White-throats
and Cardinals and Juncos, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Downy, Red-bellied Wpkr,
Flicker, White-breasted Nuthatch, great close view of a Red-tailed Hawk,
many Blue Jays, and a few Bluebirds. For water birds - many Ruddies, ~ 20
Bufflehead, a pair of Mute Swan, five Tundra Swan (fly-over), and hordes of
Canada Geese.
The new ponds are all frozen over - one held three high-school students
playing hockey - since the roads out here were far too bad for them to get
to school.
