Hi Bob,

I would like to look for the Harris's Sparrow, maybe tomorrow or
Thursday. I would appreciate directions and if someone sees it today,
would appreciate knowing that also. Was it seen at a particular time of
the day?

Thanks,
-Joe

The 16th annual Carroll County winter bird count was held last
Saturday, January 18, 2003. We have a tentative species count of 76.
Our average is 81 but ice on the lakes knocked out a few species that
were present a week ago. Highlights were an immature Harris's Sparrow
at a feeder near Manchester, 2 Chipping Sparrows, 2 Phoebes, a Catbird,
and 3 Short-eared Owls.
The Harris's Sparrow is at a house about two tenths of a mile off
the road. Access is by a steep icy lane. There is not much room to
park to view the feeder. Consequently I am not broadcasting the details
widely. If you are interested in looking for this bird I can send you
the details of the location privately. Since the homeowners do not
watch birds there will be no updates on its presence from them. At
least they put out a good feeder! It also hosted a Chipping Sparrow
among the many White-throats, Song Sparrows, Cardinals, House Finches,
Carolina Chickadees, Tufted Titmice, and White-breasted Nuthatches.
Previous Carroll County Harris's Sparrows were at feeders during the
winters of 1984 and 2000. Both remained into spring.
Congratulations to Sharon Schwemmer who found the bird Saturday.
