Anyone have addtional information on this?" This is my "old stomping grounds". The bird is about 40 or so miles northwest of Albany in the hinterlands south of the Mohawk. I used to take a February "Florida Vacation" every year in the town of that name in Montgomery County. I got over to Root on occasion. Good country for shrikes (Northern, of course), rough-legs, turkeys, Snow Buntings, and Lapland Longspurs. There are photos of the hawk-owl here: http://www.brewsterslinnet.com/nhow/. Appended is an extended quote from Hudson-Mohawk birder Rich Guthrie originally posted to the Massbird news group. Another recent poster to Massbird noted a shrike in the owl's vicinity two days ago. "The bird is in Town of Root, Montgomery County, New York. It was intially found by the Chuck and Ellen Kieweg, members of the Hoffman Bird Club of Pittsfield, MA. The Kiewegs were kind enough to share word of their discovery with the Hudson Mohawk Bird Club from whence word went out on NYBirds. Many folks are saying thanks to the Kiewegs. For those interested in seeing the bird, go WEST on NYS Rt. 20, through Esperance to Schoharie County Rt 7A (aka Corbin Hill Road), turn right (NORTH) and go 1.6 miles, crossing the Montgomery County line. The bird favors roadside Norway Maples 3/10's mile north of the county line. There were ten or so Rough-legged Hawks along the roads to the west of the Hawk Owl site as well. Rich Guthrie New Baltimore, The Greene County, New York gaeltic@capital.net" I won't be making this pilgrimage sorry to say. Sigh, my NYState list (sniff). Best of luck to all who go after this bird. Hawk-owls are awfully nice birds.
