A small flock of American Robins flew thru the trees on the way down, about 10. On the canal path, found: Great Blue Heron - 3 (1 in canal; 2 by river) Canada Goose - 5 Green-winged Teal - 9 Mallard - 10 (6m; 4f) Northern Shoveler - ? Common Goldeneye - ? Bufflehead - ? Turkey Vulture - 1 Ring-billed Gull - 5 Mourning Dove - 17 Red-bellied Woodpecker - 3 YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKER - 1 (male, checking out sap in large maple) Downy Woodpecker - 4 (1m; 1f; 2?) Hairy Woodpecker - 1 (m) Pileated Woodpecker - 1 Carolina Chickadee - 8 Tutfted Titmouse - 5 White-breasted Nuthatch - 4 Carolina Wren - 5 European Starling - 3 Northern Cardinal - 4 White-throated Sparrow - 3 The Teal, Goldeneye, Shoveler and Bufflehead were on the Potomac about opposite of Mile Post 7. They began coming in late just as the sun began to set, so it was hard to see how many of which species. The Teal were the closest, so easier to tell. The river did not have as much ice on it as last weekend. Beautiful, sunny & crisp afternoon!
