Just before we = crossed the bridge onto the island a Great Horned Owl flew across the = front of the car and landed on a tree 30 ft away. The owl let us get the = scope out and get a great look at it but flew away as we packed up = unlike the Barred Owl of two weeks ago who did not care what we did. It = seems to be our lucky time for sighting owls. We totaled 48 species with = quite a few common species absent. The waterfowl were abundant. Ice = covered a good portion of the water but there were large open spaces = throughout. A list of some of the sightings are: Black Vultures Turkey Vultures Canada Geese Tundra and Mute Swans Canvasbacks-about 200 Redheads-3 Goldeneye-14 Pintail-12 Scaups Buffleheads Red-breasted Mergansers-3 Ruddy Ducks Sharp-shinned Hawk Cooper's Hawk Kestrel Great Black-backed Gull Red-bellied, Downy, Hairy and Pileated Woodpeckers Flicker Yellow-bellied Sapsucker Horned Lark Pipit Cedar Waxwings Robins Savannah Sparrows White-throated Sparrows The Bald Eagle is still on its nest. Someone, I assume the people who = run the management area, have erected a duck blind to view the nest. At = the same time there is a sign that tells you to view from the road. We = had the managed area to ourselves except one other car. During the week = we don't often see many people.
