However, I do use a very nifty "mini amplifier-speaker" from Radio Shack that is 3-1/2 x 2-1/2 x 1-1/4 inches in size and is very light. Runs off a 9-volt battery and can sit in a pocket. It's better at lower frequencies than higher frequencies, due to the small size of the speaker, but not too bad overall. Catalog number 277-1008C -- at least that's the number on mine, which is probably about 3 years old. A good Radio Shack store should be able to locate the contemporary equivalent of this speaker. Connection to the player is via a standard coaxial plug. You don't need a pair of speakers for bird song. I use a Sony MiniDisc (MD) Player for the source of bird songs, recorded onto blank MD disks from various CD's playing on my laptop computer. I don't know how the MD stores the song files (not as MP3 files apparently, maybe just as .wav files); the storage "density" is not as compact as MP3, probably. But the setup is efficient nevertheless. (Incidentally I'm indebted to Peter Hannan of Anne Arundel County, who was leading a field trip at an MOS conference when I first experienced this technology. I knew right away I wanted it and I've loved it ever since I bought the equipment!)
