MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" My wife and I visited friends in Ontario, Canada over the Labor-Day weekend and people were talking about how all the trees were loaded with seeds and cones. It was pretty obvious to us at that time that there would be little to no movement of the northern finches since they had plenty of food up north. Bird movement is primarily due to their quest for food. -----Original Message----- From: Adam Smith [mailto:cyanbluecobalt@MSN.COM] Sent: Monday, February 10, 2003 8:55 AM To: MDOSPREY@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM Subject: [MDOSPREY] Thought on this years Winter birds or absence thereof.... I thought that we had a good cold Winter..actually it was more of a normal one. What I did think was unusual was the lack of Northern birds pushing south. At my parents house this past late Fall/early Winter my mother (who lives at the skinnies part of Maryland, the point in Washington County, ie Hancock MD)informed me that they had several Red-headed nuthatches. But they left before by-mid December and have never returned. She also said that last week while she was filling the feeders, she tought she heard a flock of Evening Grosbeaks..she rushed put filled a platform feeder with of grey-stripe sunflower(a favorite of these birds) but she said they never showed. I have also noticed a lack of posts of other birds of this sort..ie Pine Siskin and the like. Is this the result of El Nino or La Nina..I heard on the news last night that the Iditerog(sp?) Dog-sled race in Alaska was going to bem moved over 300 miles North because a lack of snow in ALAKSA!!! Does anyone else feel that this is a strange year?
