For those interested in this subject, I direct you to Wilson's autobiography, Naturalist, Chapter 12, The Molecular Wars, in which he talks at some length about his problems with Watson, who hardly spoke six words to Wilson in the many years they 'uneasily coexisted' at Harvard. I have heard from other sources that Watson was (is?) not a particularly likeable or modest man. I can hardly imagine him as an earnest birder. Because of men like Watson, you will find that many biology departments, like Harvard, became fragmented into molecular and macro units, each with their own baliwicks, separate faculty, etc., often studying the same things, but from different perspectives, or on different scales.
