Hundreds of birds all day long. A fresh cover of 8-inches of snow was present this morning, and by evening another 8 or more had been added. Right now it has turned to sleet. (8 p.m.) Highlights included a Fox Sparrow (first in my yard for 2003) and several Towhees (2 M, 1 F). Yesterday, prior to any snow, a Purple Finch showed up very briefly (another first for the year in my yard). Today, in all the snow, there were dozens of Goldfinches and House Finches, but I did not manage to see the Purple Finch again. On the slushy waters of Leeds Creek in front of my house today there were four Hooded Mergansers, several Mallards, one pair of Lesser Scaup, and six Canada Geese. Great numbers of Canada Geese remain in this region, but they have stopped making much use of Leeds Creek near my place.
