In addition to regular nuthatches, chickadees, titmice, downys, Carolina Wrens and redbellys, notable birds at my suet are: Common Crow - I have to remember to close the top or they take the whole cake out. Hairy Woodpecker - One female visits. First time I've ever seen one at my suet (in the summer they use my split rail fence as a larva feeder as they go after the carpenter bees). Brown Thrasher - This one has been coming for weeks...he's explored new realms of thrasher adroitness, approaching the suet cake from all angles. Weeks ago he started with the scraps on the ground under the suet, but then had an epiphany. I guess he figured out, in some primitive yet Newtonian way, that the goodies must be coming from above and that gravity was part of the equation. Blue Jay - Three or four raid the cake frequently Northern Cardinal - Yes, even these are giving the cake a visit. Common Grackle - They take over the other feeders; I guess they think that the suet is a fair target. As you might guess, I'm going though a suet cake nearly every day. The cold and snow have also brought birds to or near the feeder not usually likely: Hermit Thrush - hangs around the feeders quite a bit. Is it just me, or did the hermit population explode this year? Common Flicker - A few have landed on my seed feeder in the last few days! I guess pickin's are slim elsewhere.
