A friend gave me Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson's book "The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats," which I couldn't believe got good reviews from the president of PETA, Desmond Morris, and Elizabeth Marshall Thomas. The author moved to New Zealand, obtained five cats, and has no remorse about letting them run free in a rain forest where they frequently grab rare birds that have never learned to flee predators. He, like others who have commented on this list, argues that it would be cruel to keep cats indoors. Is that more cruel than causing the suffering, death, and possible extinction of birds? Please don't buy Masson's book.
