The birds know it, even if we can't feel it yet...In front of the building I work in there's a huge patch of bare ground (I think there are steam pipes underneath because there's always a line of dead grass in the summer). When I stepped outside a little while ago to run some errands I saw hundreds of robins working the ground. There were a few red-winged blackbirds mixed in here and there. Then from across the street I could hear the unmistakable sound of Cedar Waxwings - I looked over and there was a tree full of waxwings and robins. They were going back and forth between that tree and a huge holly tree, gobbling up the berries. After I'd looked my fill I got in the car to go...but, looking up, I saw, off in the distance...well, I wasn't sure what it was at first. It was just big. Canada Goose, I thought...Um, no, definitely not. Turkey Vulture (there are plenty out today, as well as Black Vultures). Bald Eagle! Don't ask me how a Canada Goose turned into a Bald Eagle (I don't even understand how my brain works!), but I watched it until it was below the treeline and I could see it no more...At which point a co-worker asked me what I was looking at (I had my binoculars out). It would have been nice to show her a Bald Eagle, but it was long gone...but I did get to show her the Cedar Waxwings. They're one of my favorite birds - I never get tired of seeing them! I wish every Monday could be like this!
