That bird, a well-known tame and aggressive meat eater, appeared to expect the red dot was a scab covering a tasty meat meal. We had been warned that they would attack any sores or scabs on exposed skin. Later I learned that the Hood Mockingbird feeds heavily on turtle hatchlings and sea lion placenta, as well as on any insects it can find. Life on those dry islands can be pretty tough.
