Red-necked Grebes Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed This morning, March 1, Paul Pisano and Lisa Shannon and I followed up on a Red-necked Grebe found on Wednesday by Erika Wilson and company near the mouth of Four Mile Run. Collectively we found: 7 + between Memorial Bridge and 14th Street Bridge (or US 50 and I 395) 2 at the mouth of Four Mile Run, 1 near the GW Parkway shoreline 2 off Jones Point, Alexandria: one that came as close as 15 or 20 feet from us!! and the other way across the river near the Maryland shoreline Among other birds we saw were a Horned Grebe and a male Common Goldeneye near the mouth of the Tidal Basin, more than 200 Common Mergansers (with one Red-necked) from Belle Haven Marina in Alexandria (many of which were in Maryland waters), and one adult Lesser Black-backed Gull on the east side of the stone bridge on GW Parkway south of old town Alexandria (this bird was walking toward Maryland). And no Bald Eagles anywhere.
