RI is still 50% snow-covered and trails very muddy. Land birds were in short supply. A Pileated Woodpecker pair provided the highlight along the swamp trail. Five Red-necked Grebe were on the Potomac between RI and the Kennedy Center. An Eastern Phoebe, bobbing its tail near the walkway bridge, was a first for this year and a welcome sign of the impending arrival of Spring. Twenty-two species observed on/around the island: Red-necked Grebe (5) D-C Cormorant (1) Great Blue Heron (2) Canada Goose (many) Wood Duck (12) American Black Duck (2) Mallard (20) Green-winged Teal (1-male) Hooded Merganser (1-female) Ring-billed Gull (many) Rock Dove (1) Belted Kingfisher (1) Downy Woodpecker (2) Red-bellied Woodpecker (1) Pileated Woodpecker (2) Eastern Phoebe (1) American Crow (2) Carolina Wren (3) American Robin (many) Song Sparrow (2) White-throated Sparrow (4) Northern Cardinal (8) Tom Marko MOS-MCC tlmarko@us.med.navy.mil ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
