Too often people just plant a lot of trees thinking it must automatically be a good thing, without thinking about the habitat they might be replacing. Several years ago some of us complained about builders planting a lot of trees at Morgan Run right out in good grasshopper sparrow habitat (yes they are there). It was part of a program wherein builders were asked to plant trees to replace the forest habitat they were fragmenting to shreds. DNR wrote us back explaining that there are just as many troubled woodland species to be concerned about. Quite honestly I was never really satisfied with their answer. Having taken courses recently in things like landscape ecology as well as environmental assessment, I think that an impact statement on the tree planting might be a good idea. Where do we call/write to get this started?
