Here are the highlights: A male American Kestrel flying around the Castle. A Brown Creeper near the USDA North Building (2) Red-necked Grebes in the Potomac near the Tidal Basin entrance (A new bird for my Mall list!) (2) Horned Grebes at the same spot (2) Buffleheads in the Tidal Basin (another new Mall bird) A male Red-breasted Merganser in the Tidal Basin Several Double-breasted Cormorants in the Tidal Basin Over 200 gulls resting on the retreating ice and feeding on the dead fishes slowly thawing. Sadly, I was able to=20 easily resolve each inspected gull into one of the following: Ring-billed, Herring, Greater Black-backed (in order of abundance). =20 American Robins everywhere! Common Grackles strangely UN-common for early March (there were a few here and there). Singing titmice, chickadees, cardinals and Song Sparrows everywhere too.
