Subject: waterfowl at Tidal Basin continue MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Following-up from Jim Felley's post, I stopped by the mouth of the Tidal Basin this afternoon (Wed, 3/5), on my bike ride home from work. Viewing from the little bridge over the mouth, in the Tidal Basin were: a small flock of c.8 LESSER SCAUP, 2 BUFFLEHEADS, 1 m. COMMON GOLDENEYE, 1 m. RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, and 1 LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL (amongst 100's of the usual suspects). On the Potomac, not far from the mouth were 3 HORNED GREBES, and 2 RED-NECKED GREBES. I saw a third RED-NECKED GREBE from the bike path on the Virginia side, about halfway between the RR bridge and Gravelly Point. I also saw a flock of 9 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS flying up river. This isn't particularly unusual, except they had that "we've got places to go and things to do" look about them (ie, clearly on the move). I expect that numbers will build rapidly over the next few weeks. Good birding, Paul Pisano cheep@erols.com Arlington, VA ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
