Intrigued by Dave's report of 185 Redheads, I crossed the bridge this morning to visit Piscataway, one of my favorite spots for waterfowl. Dave didn't mention which part of Piscataway he visited, but I stopped both at Wharf Road and what I think of as Piscataway Park proper. The mother lode was at Wharf Road between 8:30-9:00 AM. The scene was almost magical. The lighting was perfect and the air was filled with the calls of 30 or more Tundra Swans clustered near the mouth of the creek. Even though I didn't find all 185 Redheads, I was more than satisfied with what I found. There were between 4,000 and 5,000 Lesser Scaup and a wonderful diversity of other waterfowl. Many were beyond the range for me to identify confidently. Perhaps some of the missing Redheads were among them. All told, I saw 20 species of waterfowl during my Maryland visit. Thanks, Dave!
