Also nearby were flyover Horned Larks and 4 on the ground Fox Sparrows. According to the first Maryland Atlas book the earliest egg date for American Woodcock in Maryland is February 25 in Baltimore County. With this cold winter I am mildly surprised that woodcocks are already incubating. Clutch size is usually 3 or 4 with an incubation period of about 21 days so there could be minor Scolopaxes running around at the beginning of April. During the last Atlas only two close DC blocks contained American Woodcock, both as possible breeders. This block (Washington East CW I believe) had no woodcocks. A very good find! One of these birds was on a nest containing one egg -a good confirmation for the MD/DC Atlas. Craig Tumer Washington, DC --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
