The name is applied to all herons, although it is most commonly heard in reference to Green Heron. The name refers to a heron's tendency to lose ballast when flushed up the creek. On the web, all I could find was a reference to a folk tune by that name, "named after a native bird" (http://www.greenmanreview.com/josephandhis%20fiddle.html). (A Yahoo web search on the term also digs up several porn sites!) A friend thought it might be a heron species, but beyond that I'm in the dark.
