The Tidal Basin was of more than usual interest, with: 4 HORNED GREBE 6 RED-NECKED GREBE 4 GREATER SCAUP (all drakes) 1 BUFFLEHEAD 24 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER 3 COMMON MERGANSER 20+ DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT Washington Channel had: 2 PIED-BILLED GREBE 1 HORNED GREBE 16 (conservative estimate) RED-NECKED GREBE 3 CANVASBACK (all drakes) 3 BUFFLEHEAD 12 RED-BREASTED MERGANSER 30+ AMERICAN COOT I forgot to turn off messages from the local list-servs before I went away, so I am aware that Red-necked Grebes have been ubiquitous the last few weeks. Nevertheless, it's great to see them, particularly a couple of birds that are showing definite signs of breeding plumage. Also, they are relatively unafraid of people. Only one flushed when I walked very close. Mike Bowen Bethesda D.H.
