It reminded me of having the chance for a few years to stop in the Rare Book Room at the Duke Library where they had on disply the original edition, folio size books. I got to know the librarian and they'd let me turn the pages for display every day. Once I got to carry them in a cleaning project - - the four volumes were worth about $2 million and that was 30 years ago. (I didn't know that until after I was done.) The auction sounds fascinating and I will check it out. You all should be aware that such an offering represents an outrage to bibliographers and bibliophiles - - cutting up beautiful books solely because the profits from selling individulal prints are even higher than selling the books themselves. Thanks again, Leo Weigant >>> Warblerick@AOL.COM 03/13/03 08:03AM >>> Hi all, Just a note to all who may be interested in the purchase/collection of Audubon prints. There is an on-line art auction going on at auctions@haleysteele.com These prints are from the royal octavo edition of Audubons Birds of America, an edition from 1859. They are lithographs from an early volume of a popular book from just after Audubons death (1851). They come with a certificate of authenticity, with starting bids at $50. Some very desirable prints are still available for very good prices. The auction ends on March 25, so check it out now. It started earlier this week (Monday, March 10). Two prints I looked at this morning which caught my eye, without bids on either as of this morning, were Canvas Back Ducks (with Baltimore harbor in the background), and Swamp Sparow (Bonnie!) perched on flowering May apple. Very beautiful. I have bids in on a few, and purchased the Eskimo Curlew for $80! P.S. NORM, the Osprey print was still available this morning and is very beautiful too.
