In Frederick County, at least 20 Wood Ducks and 2 Green-winged Teals were on the Potomac a short distance upstream from the Monocacy Aqueduct. Around the aqueduct itself were 1 Redhead, 2 Bufflehead, 2 Red-necked Grebes (best seen from the boat ramp parking lot), and many Ring-billed Gulls. Six species of woodpecker (all but Red-headed) were active in the woods on either side of the aqueduct. Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks flew overhead. Driving to and from Hughes Hollow in Montgomery County, I twice saw kestrels on wires on Willard and River Roads. At Hughes Hollow, a Northern Rough-winged Swallow had joined the Tree Swallows. Down at Riley's Lock, a Tundra Swan and Bald Eagle were nice additions to the ducks and grebes recently reported in that area.
