The rangers reported that the first bird flew in late yesterday and the second arrived shortly before I got there at 4:30 PM. I hope they have better luck this year - last year's nest was destroyed by crows. They made a second attempt and we once saw a late hatchling but no further sightings were reported and the female did not remain at the nest. The previous year did see two healthy youngsters leave the nest and begin hunting their own food. This is a popular pair that nests close to an overlook and has a large rooting section. Hopefully there'll be something to cheer this year. Not much bird action in the park itself but there were a couple small groups of ducks, mostly Lesser Scaup, a few Buffleheads, 1 Canvasback on the bay and a pair of Hooded Mergansers in the pond.
