The earliest spring date I've seen this bird in DC -- until today -- was April 1. (in 2000) I was walking along the Capital Crescent Trail in DC, about 1/4 mile above Fletcher's Boathouse, at 10 a.m. this morning, and heard a Yellow-throated sing repeatedly. After a few minutes I finally saw it, high in a tall Sycamore growing in the low area between the CC Trail and the C&O Canal towpath. This is just a bit upstream from Milepost 8 of the CC Trail. Other birds of interest in this general area were a drake N. SHOVELER with Mallards in the flooded ponds just above Chain Bridge, an AMERICAN KESTREL in the same area, a FOX SPARROW along the towpath, and 4 N. ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS near the lock house at Fletcher's. There were 8 WOOD DUCK in the wet woods upstream from Fletcher's. The Potomac river bank and trails are very muddy and covered with jetsam. Numbers of DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS and AMERICAN GOLDFINCHES are both picking up. I listened intently for N. Parula and La. Waterthrush, but no sight or sound of either species - YET!
