After watching what seemed to be a bird in the nest (could only see the upper-coverts), the bird flew out to a tree nearby, perched for only a minute or so, and then flew back onto the nest. Its red shoulder patch was evident on the flight back in. Other birds seen between there and Lock 8 this morning included: Red-necked Grebe Double-crested Cormorant (17) Canada Goose (15) Wood Duck (5 - 3m; 2f) Mallard (6 - 3 m/f pairs) Northern Shoveler (2 - m/f) Common Merganser (2m) Red-breasted Merganser (2 - 1m; 1f) Turkey Vulture (2) Red-shouldered Hawk (on nest; probable female) Mourning Dove (3) Belted Kingfisher (m) Red-bellied Woodpecker (4) Downy Woodpecker (5) Hairy Woodpecker (m) Northern Flicker (y-s, 4; 1 m/f exhibiting courtship behavior) Pileated Woodpecker (2) Eastern Phoebe American Crow Fish Crow Carolina Chickadee (17) Tufted Timouse (14) White-breasted Nuthatch Carolina Wren (4) Northern Cardinal (11) American Robin (5) European Starling (24) Chipping Sparrow Song Sparrow (5) White-throated Sparrow (3) Common Grackle American Goldfinch (3m) At our feeders this morning, also had a Pine Warbler and 2 Chipping Sparrows. The chilly drizzle was worth it. Also, my email address is changed from mattfp@aol.com to frankpowers@comcast.net.
