Date: Fri, 11 Apr 2003 09:19:10 -0400 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Sarah Anderson Subject: C&O Canal, Widewater, Common Loon Friday 4/11 I took a little walk on my way to work this morning (~7:30) and confirmed what I thought I saw yesterday evening as it was getting dark: there is a common loon in breeding plumage in the "widewater" section of the C&O canal (just upstream of the parking lot across from Old Angler's Inn). Also seen in or flying above widewater: caspian tern double-crested cormorants red-necked grebes? (not in breeding plumage) great blue heron mallards canada geese and, I think I caught a glimpse of an osprey flying away with its breakfast a well-spent 30 minutes! Sarah Anderson Cabin John, MD p.s. last Sunday afternoon I saw a flotilla of well over 200 double-crested cormorants, mostly single-file, headed downstream. I started watching them about 1/4 mile above Brookmont Dam on the Potomac.
