At Piney Dam we saw 2 Common Loons and a Horned Grebe in breeding plumage. One of the loons called as well - neat! At the C&O Canal Towpath at Little Orleans, we saw 2 pairs of Louisiana Waterthrush calling back and forth, and singing once. We saw Twinleaf in bloom on the mountainside, and 5 species of butterflies. Our total for the day was 53 bird species - no Red-necked Grebes. One other welcome sighting was Mary Huebner cycling on the towpath, working her BB Atlas block. Cheers Mary!
