Great day, sunny both day, warm on Sat and little warm on Sun. A lot of wildlife beside birds, most I ever seen. Most unusual bird not normally found in Washington County was a American Bittern. It flew low over canal at treetop at the path led to east and was seen at close range headed NW over the trail near the edge of the Big Pool on Sat at sunset with some light in background. As it headed NW before flew overhead, at first i thought it was a night heron from the distance until it getting closer. 1 Common Loon 1 Pied-billed Grebe - possible 2, in distance 4 Red-necked Grebe 13 Double-crested Cormorant 1 American Bittern 22 Canada Goose 2 Mallard 2 American Black Duck 2 Wood Duck 2 Gadwall 3 American Wigeon - possible 4, in distance 14 Ring-necked Duck (8m, 6f) 3 Ruddy Duck 5 Bufflehead 3 Turkey Vulture 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 2 Red-tailed Hawk 2 Osprey 1 American Kestrel 1 Belted Kingfisher 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 2 Downy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker 1 Pileated Woodpecker 2 Eastern Phoebe 33 Tree Swallow 17 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 4 Barn Swallow 5 American Crow 2 Fish Crow 3 Carolina? Tiger Swallowtail - male 1 unknown 1 unknown I need help on unidentified turtles and butterflies. Halfway at Big Pool, the turtle's head at surface and show a lot of small yellow spots on it black head and has all black on shell. It may not be Spotted Turtle, because this has spots on shell or Mud Turtle, because this had tan spots on head and looks small. The one I saw was about same size as Spotted Turtle. Any tips. Second unknown turtle, roughly the size between normal sized Painted Turtle and huge sized Red-bellied Turtle (a lot of Red-bellied are huge at canal, & swampy pond. All color on is black/gray all over, no spot or stripe, has tail about 1 & 1/2'' long, not snapping turtle. Unidentified butterflies: both are fritillary, one is small and one is large. small is about same suize as American lady. Is not American lady and the large size about same as Monarch. I check the book and all fritillary are rare in western maryland and none are in season yet according to the book. Doesn't look like Pearl Cresent or Checkerspot.
