The bird you have described matches up well with the ones I saw last Sunday, especially the fact that the forehead of the bird was incompletely black. That's the main reason I didn't think that I was seeing goldfinches. If the birds were in fact immature or molting, that could explain why there seemed to be little or no black marking on their foreheads. That's a possibility I hadn't considered.
