I highly recommend it to anyone who birds in Maryland. Here are some questions it can answer: How common is a species in Maryland during any month or week of the year? What are the earliest and latest dates eggs are in the nest for the species? Does the species breed in my county? Is it likely to be found at all in my county? When have the earliest migrants arrived? When the great masses? Do a few individuals linger into the winter? There is a very effective bar graph for each species through the calendar year, egg dates, and county information. There are codes denoting the type of habitat in Maryland where one might expect to find each species. Of course, the information in the book is only as good as the records of sightings available. So we have a hand in "writing" the book as Maryland birders who report our reliable sightings to this list, the atlas project and/or the Voice of the Naturalist. Many of the current "yellow book" editors are on this list and might want to add something. As far as I know, the 3rd Edition (1996) is still the most recent. Can anyone tell us when the next edition is expected? I bought my copy at the Audubon Naturalist Society bookstore in Bethesda, MD. It is also available directly from MOS. See the above link. Is is available in bookstores or on-line? I'd really like to take a look at it.
