Number 62 for the year. Ovenbirds are around and Gwen and = I saw our first hummingbird on Sunday. The biggest surprise is that we = had over 50 Chipping Sparrows feeding on Saturday. This collection, = added to the 30+ White-throated Sparrow, consume a lot of Black-oiled = Sunflower. I predicted last week the Juncos would be gone this past = weekend. Saturday we had one bird remaining from the 30+ from the = weekend earlier. Another house arriver was Blue-gray Gnatcatcher on = Sunday and single male Purple Martin late Saturday night. The other = treat at the house is the pair of Brown Thrasher. I think this species = is sexually dimorphic. The male is more chocolate rust, and has more = color on the flanks. The female is also smaller. I will be watching = these two as the season progresses. The differences are easier to see = when they are side by side. I will look for other difference in the = field but side by side it is clear the male is different from the = female. =20 Further a field, the Red-headed Woodpecker remains at Bumpy Oak = Wetlands. The Caspian Tern and two Great Egrets, of a week ago, has = moved on. Warblers in the area were Parula, Common Yellowthroat, and = Louisiana Waterthrush. Myrtles were moving everywhere I seemed to stop. = =20 Gwen and I had seven male Wood Duck courting a single female at the = Mattawoman Wildlands area on Rt. 229. Yellow-throated Vireos were = singing at this location. White-eyed was singing at Bumpy Oak. Barn, = Tree, and Rough-winged Swallow were feeding at Bumpy Oak. Forsters = Terns were feeding at the Port Tobacco Marina. Purple Martins have = returned there. =20 Finally, a second hand report of a Male Baltimore Oriole in White Plain. = I did not have time to check this out yet. Next weekend. Good naturing.
