If you are going to spend at least a day in the area, I suggest you also head east of Princess Anne to the border with Worcester Co. You can take West Post Office Road to Perry Hawkins Road etc. etc. and bird the areas where both Five Bridges Road and Fleming Mill Pond Road cross Dividing Creek into Worcester Co. You will need a good county map, so you will know where those etc. etcs take you. Also stop at the Wellington Wildlife Management Area. There are many of good areas to bird in Somerset Co. but it's difficult to explain how to bird these areas without lots of instructions. Incidently, another very interesting area is behind the state prison that is on US 13 not too far from the rest stop you mention. At the north end of the prison there is a dirt road that goes past the newly constructed state police barracks that is on US 13. If you drive along past the 90 degree turn to the left, which takes you around the west side of the prison, there is a large borrow pit area that had lots of Grasshopper Sparrows breeding last year. This area looks very interesting and can use more birding. The dirt road is probably a mile long and comes out on a paved road at the south west corner of the prison. At the end of the dirt road you can turn left (east) to get back to US 13. Charlie PS. Don't forget about the Breeding Bird Atlas. Keep notes about possible, probably, and confirmed sightings, and where you see them, and report them to me.
