I would think that MOS and the Maryland birdwatching community would be more sensible than to make a statement that indicates they expect to have control over the use of private land in any manner that does not impact the environment. You are just as likely to be shot on private land by someone target shooting or defending their property against trespassing birders. On a recent Sunday I had a bullet whiz by me, from someone shooting at a groundhog! I think that with the Atlas underway, it would not be wise to make public statements that could potentially close private land to bird surveys. I know plenty of farmers who would not allow birders on their land if they suspected, or knew, that the birders wanted some say in telling them what they could do on their land.
