First was meeting Leo Weigant. Then later, a singing waterthrush was well seen along the creek near the last bend in the road before the school house. This bird was quite yellow underneath, the legs were not pink, it was very dark above, no white beneath the eye, and all that combined with the song, which was only a few simple notes (loud), descending in pitch, no trill or warble - I don't have a lot of experience with waterthrushes, but I am fairly certain this was a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH. (Leo - I think from the song this is the same bird we saw earlier when the lighting was poor.) At the same location I had a brief but also quite good look at an adult male HOODED WARBLER. Hopefully these sightings will be confirmed by others - there were plenty of birders there today. The Prairie Warblers were still present near the campground on the hill. Still lots of N. Parula - at one point we stood just off the road in a small clearing and three Parulas descended into the understory not ten feet from us, then spent several minutes cavorting about the clearing - best looks we've ever had at these beautiful birds. Also many Common Yellowthroats calling and at least two Ovenbirds. Two calling Red-shouldered Hawks as we were getting back to our car. When we left the Kingsley trail parking lot, we drove down the dirt road across Clarksburg Rd and heard more Prairie Warblers over there as well. Met one birder who had seen Prairies in that area the previous day. Great day to be out. Good birding to all. Joe Alexander Middletown, Frederick Co., MD Frederick Co.
