We had many good birds, with 11 warbler species, 2 vireos, and 7 raptors. Best bird of the day was a very cooperative MERLIN, which was simply perched in a tree right on the road overlooking the upper fields. It sat for at least 10 minutes while we all stared, not believing how lucky we were. It was large and appeared to be a female. Gemma Radko made herself into a living tripod for Clive Harris's scope, so others could get even better views of this beauty. Kudos to Clive for finding it and Gemma for her human-tripod efforts! We also had an American Kestrel, Bald Eagle (as we tallied in the parking lot it flew overhead), Sharp-shinned Hawk, and a soaring Cooper's Hawk which just wouldn't leave, as well as Osprey and Red-tailed Hawk. Warblers included a singing NASHVILLE, many singing Prairies and N. Parulas, Blue-winged, C. Yellowthroats, Yellow-rumpeds, Ovenbirds, Black&White, Black-throated Green, Pine and Palm. A WARBLING VIREO was my first ever for this site, and a very loquacious White-eyed was enjoyed by all. Other nice birds were a single singing Eastern Meadowlark, a pair of Hermit Thrushes, Caspian Tern and DC Cormorant, a pair of Common Loons, Green Heron, Brown Thrashers, and we tallied 68 species as a group. After the rest left Dave Griffin and I went down to Brighton Dam where we tallied 2 more species, CLIFF SWALLOWS (at least 2 dozen), and a Herring Gull, for an even 70. Thanks to all who attended. It was really a great time!
