If my eyes do not deceive me, this bird is a West Indian Whistling-Duck, one of the rarest species of waterfowl in this hemisphere. How it got to Dismal Swamp I don't know. This genus is world-famous for long-distance vagrancy. The nearest breeders are in the northern Bahama Islands. Hats off to Don for what is perhaps the fastest circulation of the "word" (less than 1 hour) and the image on a major Virginia event, whatever its origin.
