The only time I was ever surprised = by a Turkey (as you probably know they are typically very wary), was when = I flushed a hen off of her nest. This being atlas season and all, I'd = recommend checking to be sure you didn't happen across a nest with eggs ? = (i.e. did you check the spot that you flushed the bird from ?). When this = happened to me, I got to approximately15-20 feet away before she blasted = off. I was so startled that I yelled (cursed actually) at the top of my = lungs. I personally don't know if late April is too early for eggs or not = (yellow book says 13 May to 4 Jun). Those dates may be the result of a = lack of supporting data (Iliff pers. comm). My startling experience = occurred on July 4th about 6 or 7 years ago.
