Walking the Mears Farm (corner of Rolling Rd. & Foxhall Farms Rd. in SW Balt. Co.), we had nice looks at a singing NASHVILLE WARBLER, and also enjoyed a singing PRAIRIE WARBLER, and a flyover BALTIMORE ORIOLE. The bird of the day was an AMERICAN BITTERN, flushed from the Storm Water Mgmt Pond at UMBC around 7 p.m. This is a first for the campus. Other birds of interest were COOPER'S HAWK and HERMIT THRUSH, along with a recent influx of Wood Thrushes and catbirds. Of particular note is what I assume was a WOOD DUCK flying at dusk into the nest box at the west end of Pig Pen Pond. This is noteworthy, because this box has probably been there for more than ten years, and as far as I know, has never before been used. Also, House Wrens are beginning to build nests in some of the small nestboxes on campus, and the bluebird box in the woods now has several chickadee eggs in it.
