Bittern @ Hughes Hollow 5/1 Mime-version: 1.0 Content-type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit Hi -- Misty and overcast this morning so we decided to try Hughes Hollow and some of the areas along the C&O canal. When we arrived at Hughes Hollow, the first thing of note were Orioles! -- both species in and singing along the impoundments. Very nice to see and hear. We also enjoyed close looks (first for the year) at two male and one female Prothonotary Warblers. Walking the dike between the first and second impoundments on the right, we flushed an American Bittern from the ditch, which flew over the trees and into the further impoundment. Was surprised, however, not to see or hear any Yellow Warblers. After Hughes, we went to Sycamore Landing Rd. -- turkey hunters are out so we stuck to the road, seeing one Yellow-crowned Night Heron in flight. The C&O Canal downstream had many Parulas, a few Redstarts and two Ceruleans. Unfortunately, due to the poor light, most were heard-only. A stop at Seneca and Violette's Lock completed the morning. Very few actual migrants were observed, primarily just the local breeders. Our list included: Warblers: Prothonotary (6), Redstart (2), Black-and-White (1), Black-throated Blue (1), Yellow-throated (1 @ Seneca), Louisiana Waterthrush (1), Cerulean (2), Prairie (10), Parula (12), Myrtle (12), Common Yellowthroat (8). Others: Wood Thrush (~12), Yellow-throated Vireo (1), Red-eyed Vireo (20), White-eyed Vireo (1), Baltimore Oriole (6), Orchard Oriole (4), Eastern Wood-pewee (1), Great Crested Flycatcher (5), Eastern Kingbird (2), Ruby-crowned Kinglet (1), B-G Gnatcatcher (25), Yellow-billed Cuckoo (1), Rubythroated Hummingbird (1), American Bittern (1), Yellow-crowned Night-heron (1), Merlin (1).
