One point is how the total length is measured. Usually, it's measured when
a dead bird is strecthed 'with reasonable force'. Some books give the
actual field numbers when a living bird is held at hand 'in a natural
position'. I assume the dead bird measurements are some 15 % longer than
the living ones.
