I have just started using a Creative Nomad Jukebox 3 (an MP3 player with a hard drive) to record songs, using a shotgun microphone. It seems to work well, and I can copy the .wav file to my computer, edit it in GoldWave, and analyze the recording in ScopeDSP. I do comparisons to Thayer recordings, too. One current flaw in my rig is the Jukebox 3's 12 KHz cut-off for recordings, although it can play to 20KHz. (They thought it was a good idea to eliminate high frequency noise, I think, such as unwanted warbler songs in the background of voice recordings!) I totally identify with the need for memory help. I plan to do song playback as well, to draw in non-breeding and common bird species. Have not tried that (since the mid-1980s), but have new mini-speakers for that. I've found a digital mini recorder such as one in the Panasonic's RR-QR series helpful. When I see a bird whose identify I want to verify, I record the bird sounds as well as memorizing visual features and then, at home, compare my recordings to those on the Thayer PC birding software. After I think I have a match, I use my recording as well as the Thayer software to memorize the birds' calls and songs. This gives a personal meaning to the memorization process, as I associate my recording with a particular time and place and experience. ... ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
