Along the west side of Rock Creek near Q Street May 1-3, the most numerous bird seems to be fly-over Black-Crowned Night Herons. Wait, make that Chimney Swifts... I've been seeing & hearing 3 Northern Rough-winged swallows for over a week. Most years they seem to pass through in a day or two. What should I look for to see if they may be nesting? Had my first Swainson's Thrush of the spring on May 2, by the Dumbarton Bridge (where Q crosses Rock Creek); my first Prairie Warbler at Montrose Park (also May 2); my first Eastern King Bird at Fletcher's Boathouse on May 1 (as well as my first Wood Thrush, heard only); Blackpoll Warblers (at least 2), also near the Dumbarton Bridge, May 2 & 3 -- but there are still plenty of Yellow-rumps, which keeps me from despairing that I've missed migration entirely! -- Carrol Cowan Washington DC ======================================================================= To leave the MDOsprey list, send e-mail to listserv@home.ease.lsoft.com with the following message in line 1: signoff mdosprey ======================================================================= =========================================================================
