We don't operate = on a tight Big Day schedule but do 24 hours from some chosen time. All = birds must be seen from within the county. Sue Hamilton, Arlene Ripley and = I were the Calvert County team, The Purple Martins. Long story short, we = ended up with 117 species, 5 short of last year but warblers were scarce. = Also missed some easy stuff like Red-shouldered Hawk, N. Flicker and House = Wren. Best birds were Seaside Sparrow at North Beach in the small marsh between = the road and the beach. Also had Seasides at the point at Flag Ponds on = the beach. Possibly the best bird of the "day" was a singing Saltmarsh = Sharp-tailed Sparrow in the same view as a Seaside at Flag Ponds. With the = afternoon lighthing, this bird was gorgeous! Contending for best bird was = a pair of Barn Owls in a barn. Bobolinks were found at the end of Soller's Wharf Rd. in a weedy non-alfalf= a field and at Cage Rd. and Mackall Rd. They were along Mackall Rd. this = morning sitting on phone lines over an alfalfa field. We ended up with 14 species of warblers but missed Prothonotary which is a = virtual lock at Calvert Cliffs SP. Also no Black-throated Green which = should be a gimme. There were two other teams competing: The Bobolinks in St. Mary's and The = Wandering Tattlers in Charles. Since members of those teams are subscribers= on these lists, perhaps we'll hear how they did? Tyler Bell bell@acnatsci.org California, Maryland Wave that flag...wave it wide and high!
