Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 19:14:46 -0400 Reply-To: Maryland Birds & Birding Sender: Maryland Birds & Birding From: Les Roslund Subject: Pickering Creek Wetlands - May 5 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit A noon-time visit to Pickering Creek today (5/5) provided views of the following birds: Least Sandpipers 130+ Lesser Yellowlegs ~ 40 Greater Yellowlegs ~ 10 Pectoral Sandpipers ~ 40 Semipalmated Plover 4 Dunlin 3 Short-billed Dowitcher 1 Mute Swan 7 Forster's Tern 2 Blue-winged Teal 1 (M) Mallards 3 Barn Swallows 100+ Tree Swallows ~ 40 Rough-winged Swallow 1 Bank Swallow 2 (at least) Chimney Swift 4+ Purple Martin several TV Photographers - 3 cars of - -- A team of people showed up from the local TV Station (channel 16) to get some footage of the Mute Swans. They were there for about 15 minutes, and the seven swans on site seemed to have cooperated. I do not know when the story is to be carried. I chatted briefly with a Talbot County person who, it seemed, was leading the camera team to this site for the footage. The TV coverage was being arranged and promoted by folks who were adamantly opposed to the DNR plan for Swan population reduction. Channel 16's approach to the entire story will remain to be seen.
